Possible Fraud on PayPal
Paypal is a highly popular and thoroughly legitimate company that provides
a convenient way for buyers to pay for items on-line, such as when
you buy something at an on-line auction.
Some people have been receiving email purportedly from Paypal that asks for "verification" of personal
information including your Credit Card number, it's expiration date, and an ATM PIN (which can often be used to
extract money from an ATM against your credit card).
THOSE ARE NOT LEGITIMATE REQUESTS AND DO NOT APPEAR TO ORIGINATE WITH PAYPAL.
When we submitted the requested information form, it returned a message saying the requested page was not
found. The response came from a company in the U.K.
Our best estimate is that someone misused Paypal's logo and information and the hosting company for that
individual caught the deception and blocked the attempt.
Whether that's so or not, you are reminded to never send personal or financial information over an
unsecure connection. A legitimate company will NOT request that you do so!
If you receive such a request, we recommend you notify the purported sender at their regular address or phone number --
DO NOT USE THE REPLY FEATURE OF YOUR E-MAIL -- and ask for clarification of why they need it.
